The Masjid-i-Jahan-Numa, generally known Jama Masjid is the largest and popular mosque of India. It is situated at Chawri Bazar Road, Old Delhi. Jama Masjid was founded by fifth Mughal Emperor of India, Shahjahan in 1650 AD. The construction of this large mosque has taken over a period of six years.
The face of the mosque is toward the west. The three sides of the Jama Masjid are covered with open arched colonnades and each of the three has a superior gateway in the center place. The height of the mosque is about 261 feet and width is 90 feet. The roof has three domes and beautifully decorated with alternate strips of black and white marbles. The topmost part of the dome is coated with Gold.
Approximate 25,000 devotees can stand in the mosque once at a time. Famous Red fort is also located to the east of the mosque. The main prayer hall located on the west is adorned by high cusped arches, which is stood on 260 pillars. These pillars give support to 15 domes made of marble at different elevations. Jama Masjid is the replica of the Moti Masjid of Agra. You can witness best Hindu and Islamic architecture through Jama Masjid.
